About This Position:

Robotic and autonomous systems are expected to become pervasive across a broad spectrum of applications in which United Technologies Corporation (UTC) businesses are engaged. The United Technologies Research Center (UTRC) has a tremendous opportunity for a hardworking individual to join our team as a Robotic Autonomy Researcher . The person in this role will work in the Robotics Group, part of UTRC’s Autonomous and Intelligent Systems Department. The Robotics Group at UTRC studies, develops, and transitions relevant technologies for intelligent robotics and autonomous systems. This role can work out of our research facility in East Hartford, CT or Berkeley, CA and may require the ability to travel domestically and internationally (up to 10%).

We are interested in those individuals who have pursued a primary expertise in developing and integrating algorithms endowing robotic systems and AI-enabled unmanned vehicles with a range of autonomous capabilities for operations in multiple domains. Those interested in this role should be cognizant of 3D perception, planning, machine learning, adaptation, or control theoretic techniques that are most effective and appropriate for practical implementations. The ability to apply or develop 3D physics-based simulations of autonomous systems and their virtual target environments is also desired.

The ideal candidate will have interest and experience in human-autonomy interaction or semantic world modeling facilitating intelligent planning and control of motion, tasks, or missions with emphasis on autonomy in motion (e.g., for navigating, cooperative sensing, mapping, or manipulating objects in unstructured and structured environments). You will also have a record of technical journal or conference publications.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conceive, identify, and implement rigorous approaches to meet challenges of integrating autonomy algorithms and capabilities supporting existing and new projects

  • Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team within UTRC and including university, national laboratory, and industry collaborators

  • Collaborate with UTRC program offices and UTC business units to understand near-term requirements and long term needs in support of government funding agencies to enhance existing programs

  • Have the willingness to support proposal opportunities and assist in acquisition of contract awards

  • Publish novel research results in autonomy-related conferences and journals

Projects can be expected to involve aircraft and robotic aerial systems, ground mobile robots, and robotic manipulators for diverse applications ultimately supporting UTC business units, Pratt & Whitney (gas turbine engines) and Collins Aerospace (aerospace subsystems).

Applications include new product capability development as well as product manufacturing, service, and inspection.

Education / Certifications

  • Ph.D. in Robotics, Computer Science, or Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, or Aerospace) or a related discipline is required

Basic Qualifications

  • You've completed a Ph.D. program in any of the preferred fields

  • You have up to three years of post-PhD research and development experience with a focus on autonomy technology

  • You are a US citizen or US permanent resident

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with autonomy and/or cognitive architectures and related implementations or standards for modularity and interoperability is desired

  • Familiarity with popular software frameworks and configuration management tools is desired

  • Development of or exposure to ideas for formulating assured and trustworthy autonomy solutions is a plus

  • Familiarity with C/C++, Python and/or ROS/ROS-I will be essential

  • Some experience with embedded software is also desirable

  • Knowledge of 3D simulation environments and programs is a plus

  • You have the ability to travel domestically and internationally (10%)
